The best retinol serums and retinoids, ranked by evidence.

Every leave-on product in our database built around a retinoid, scored from its full ingredient list for efficacy and safety, each from 1.0 to 5.0. A retinoid belongs in a serum or night cream that stays on your skin, not in a cleanser you rinse off. 73 products compared, one per brand in each list. Retinoids explained: tretinoin vs retinol, retinal vs retinol, best retinol serum: roc retinal, differin gel, celimax retinol, paula's choice retinol

Best retinol serums

Serums built around retinol, the most common over-the-counter retinoid, scoring 4.0 or higher for safety. Retinol usually sits after the tenth ingredient: it works at 0.1–1%, so a late position is normal for a retinoid, unlike most actives.

[ 01 · How we judge ]Retinoid types ↓

Which products should contain a retinoid

  1. 01Leave-on, used at nightSerums and night creams. Retinoids need time on the skin, and light breaks most of them down, so evening use makes sense.
  2. 02Not in a cleanser or sunscreenA retinoid in a cleanser is rinsed off in a minute, and in a daytime sunscreen it degrades in sunlight. We don't rank those.
  3. 03The form decides the strengthTretinoin is the strongest; retinal and retinol need converting first. Then every ingredient is graded, and the formula gets two scores.
[ 02 · What it treats ]

What retinoids are used for

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives, and one of the most studied ingredient families in dermatology. The evidence is strongest for acne and sun-aged skin, and good for dark marks. Pick a concern to see what the studies found.

Acne & clogged pores

Strong evidence
What it does

Retinoids normalise how skin cells shed inside the pore, so fewer plugs form, and they calm inflammation. That treats blackheads and whiteheads and helps prevent new spots.

Strongest evidence

Dermatology acne guidelines call topical retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, trifarotene) cornerstone treatments and rate them similarly effective. Adapalene 0.1% has been available without a prescription in the US since 2016.

Acne checker & best products

Fine lines & sun-aged skin

Strong evidence
What it does

Retinoids increase collagen production and speed up cell turnover, which over months softens fine lines and rough, sun-damaged texture.

Strongest evidence

Tretinoin improved sun-damaged skin in controlled trials from 1988 on. Over the counter, 0.4% retinol improved fine wrinkles in older adults over 24 weeks (Kafi 2007), and 0.05% retinal reduced wrinkles about as well as 0.05% tretinoin, with less irritation, over 44 weeks (Creidi 1998).

Best retinol serums

Dark spots & uneven tone

Moderate evidence
What it does

Faster turnover moves pigment out of the upper skin layers, so marks left by breakouts and sun spots fade more quickly.

Strongest evidence

Tretinoin 0.1% lightened melasma (Griffiths 1993) and post-inflammatory dark marks (Bulengo-Ransby 1993) in controlled trials. Results take months, and daily sunscreen is essential, because retinoids make skin more sensitive to sun.

Best vitamin C serums

Evidence levels are our reading of the human studies: Strong means repeated controlled trials and guideline support; Moderate means a few controlled trials.

[ 03 · Retinoid types ]

Types of retinoids, their strength and which need a prescription

Every retinoid has to become retinoic acid (tretinoin) to work. The fewer conversion steps, the stronger and more irritating it is: retinyl esters convert to retinol, retinol to retinal, retinal to retinoic acid.

RetinoidTypical strengthsPrescription in the US?Mostly used for
Tretinoin (Retin-A)Cream 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%; gel 0.01%, 0.025%; microsphere gel 0.04–0.1%; lotion 0.05%YesAcne, sun-aged skin, dark spots

Trifarotene (Aklief)Cream 0.005%YesAcne on the face and body
Adapalene (Differin)Gel 0.1%; 0.3%0.1% no, sold over the counter since 2016; 0.3% yesAcne
Retinal (retinaldehyde)0.05–0.2%No, cosmeticFine lines, texture; one step from retinoic acid
RetinolAbout 0.1–1%No, cosmeticFine lines, texture; two steps from retinoic acid
Hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR)Varies by brandNo, cosmeticGentle alternative; little independent research
Retinyl palmitate, propionateRarely statedNo, cosmeticThe mildest; three steps from retinoic acid

Strength percentages aren't comparable across types: 0.1% tretinoin is far stronger than 1% retinol. Prescription status is for the US and differs in other countries.

Retinol vs retinal vs Retin-A

Retin-A is a brand of tretinoin, the active form itself, and needs a prescription. Retinal is one step away from it and retinol two, so both are gentler and slower. In our database, retinal serums average 4.25 for efficacy against 4.02 for retinol serums. Adapalene is a different molecule built to target the retinoid receptors involved in acne, which is why it's an acne drug rather than an anti-aging one.

[ 04 · Tier chart ]

Every type of retinoid, on the DemythSkin tier scale

Each retinoid has its own grade in the DemythSkin ingredient database, on the same S to D scale we use for every ingredient. The grade reflects the human evidence that it works; irritation is shown separately below.

SGold standard
TretinoinRetinoic acid, Retin-A

The active form, with decades of trials for acne, sun damage and dark spots. Prescription only.

AdapaleneDifferin

Guideline-backed for acne, and better tolerated than tretinoin. 0.1% is sold over the counter.

Tazarotene and trifaroteneTazorac, Arazlo, Aklief

Prescription retinoids with strong acne trials; tazarotene is the most irritating.

RetinalRetinaldehyde

One step from retinoic acid; matched tretinoin on wrinkles with less irritation in a 44-week trial.

Retinol

The best-studied over-the-counter retinoid; works, but slower and milder than the prescription forms.

AReliable
Hydroxypinacolone retinoateHPR

A gentle ester sold as Granactive Retinoid. Promising, with little independent human research.

BPromising
Retinyl estersRetinyl palmitate, retinyl propionate

Retinyl palmitate and propionate need three conversions, so the effect on skin is small.

Bakuchiol

Not a retinoid but a plant alternative, with a few small trials. An option when retinoids are off the table.

COverhyped

None

DDocumented irritant

None

No retinoid is graded C or D. S doesn't mean gentle: the S-tier prescription retinoids are also the most irritating.

[ 06 · How to use it ]

How to use retinol, retinal and tretinoin

Start low and slow. Most irritation comes from using too much, too often, too soon.

Your evening routine

  1. CleanseA gentle cleanser, then pat your skin completely dry.
  2. RetinoidA pea-sized amount for the whole face, avoiding the corners of the eyes, nose and mouth. Two or three nights a week at first.
  3. MoisturizeA plain moisturizer on top, or underneath first if your skin is sensitive.
  4. Next morning: sunscreenSPF 30 or higher every day. Retinoids make skin more sensitive to sun.

Can I use it with…

IngredientTogether?How
NiacinamideYesNiacinamide can make a retinoid easier to tolerate. Many retinoid serums already include it.
Azelaic acidYesA common pairing for acne and dark marks; azelaic acid in the morning, the retinoid at night, or both at night once your skin is used to them.
Vitamin CYes, at different timesVitamin C in the morning, the retinoid at night.
Salicylic acid, AHAsWith careUse on different nights, or acids in the morning, to avoid over-drying.
Benzoyl peroxideDepends on the retinoidTretinoin breaks down with benzoyl peroxide; adapalene doesn't, and they're sold together.
Hyaluronic acid, ceramidesYesThey help with dryness while your skin adjusts.

Purging, and how long it takes

Some people get more breakouts in the first weeks of a retinoid, often called purging. It usually settles within a few weeks; if it doesn't, or your skin is raw or burning, stop and ask a dermatologist. Acne results usually take about 12 weeks, and fine lines several months.

Retinol low in the list is normal

In 54 of the 73 products, the retinoid sits after the tenth ingredient. For most actives that would mean a token amount, but retinoids work at 0.1–1%, so they're expected near the end. Our scoring accounts for that. The name is a different story: Ere Perez White Tea Phyto-Retinol Elixir has "retinol" in its name, but its ingredient list has bakuchiol, a plant alternative, and no retinoid.

[ 10 · FAQ ]

Retinol and retinoid questions, answered

Short answers to what people ask most, with the evidence behind them.

What is the best retinol serum?

On our scores, PURITO Retinol Retinal 2000 NAD+ Serum (4.5 efficacy) leads the retinol serums, with Theramid Clinical Vitamin A and celimax The Vita-A Retinol Shot close behind. The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane scored 4.2 and is the best value. See the full rankings.

Retinal vs retinol: which is better?

Retinal is one conversion step closer to the active form, so it works faster and more strongly at a lower percentage, and it's usually a little more irritating. In our database retinal products average 4.25 for efficacy against 4.02 for retinol. Retinol is the gentler place to start.

What is the difference between retinol and Retin-A?

Retin-A is a brand of tretinoin, the active form of vitamin A, and needs a prescription. Retinol is a cosmetic ingredient your skin has to convert twice before it works, so it's slower and gentler.

Adapalene vs retinol: which should I use?

For acne, adapalene: it's an acne drug with guideline support, sold at 0.1% without a prescription. For fine lines and texture, retinol or retinal, which are tested on aging skin. Don't layer them; pick one.

How long does tretinoin take to work?

For acne, usually around 12 weeks for clear results. For fine lines and sun damage, several months; the classic tretinoin trial measured changes at 16 weeks, and improvement continues with longer use.

How long does the tretinoin purge last?

Usually a few weeks. Breakouts in the first weeks of a retinoid are common; if they continue past about six weeks, or your skin is raw or burning, ask your prescriber.

Tretinoin cream vs gel: what is the difference?

Creams are more moisturizing and usually suit dry or sensitive skin; gels are lighter and often suit oily skin, but many contain alcohol and can be more drying. Your prescriber chooses the strength and base.

What strengths does tretinoin come in?

Creams at 0.025%, 0.05% and 0.1%; gels at 0.01% and 0.025%; microsphere gels from 0.04% to 0.1%; and a 0.05% lotion. Higher isn't automatically better: many people start at the lowest strength.

Can you use tretinoin while pregnant?

No. Retinoids, including tretinoin, retinol and adapalene, should be avoided when pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding unless your doctor says otherwise. Ask about azelaic acid instead.

Can I use salicylic acid with retinol?

Yes, but not at the same time at first. Use them on alternate nights, or salicylic acid in the morning, so your skin doesn't get over-dried.

Can I use niacinamide and tretinoin together?

Yes. Niacinamide is well tolerated and can make a retinoid easier to live with. Apply it after the tretinoin, or in the morning.

Can I use tretinoin and azelaic acid together?

Yes, it's a common combination for acne and dark marks. Many people use azelaic acid in the morning and tretinoin at night. See our azelaic acid guide.

What cleanser and moisturizer should I use with a retinoid?

A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and a plain moisturizer with ceramides or glycerin. See the cleansers and moisturizers in our sensitive skin rankings.

Which sunscreen should I use with tretinoin?

Any broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher you'll wear every day, ideally fragrance-free. Retinoids make skin more sensitive to sun, so daily sunscreen isn't optional.

Is retinol good for sensitive skin?

It can be, at a low strength. Start with a 0.2–0.3% retinol or a retinal serum two nights a week, over a moisturizer, and build up slowly. If it still stings, ask a dermatologist; azelaic acid or bakuchiol are gentler options.

Does tretinoin expire?

Yes. Use it before the expiry date on the tube, keep it closed and away from heat and light, and ask your pharmacist if it changes colour or texture.
