Best cleansers for acne

Graded on our rinse-off scale, so an efficacy score around 4.0 is strong for a cleanser. Benzoyl peroxide washes aren't here yet because we haven't scored one; they're the strongest wash for red, inflamed pimples. La Roche-Posay's Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel, one of the most searched acne washes, scored 3.4 for efficacy and 3.8 for safety.

How the acne ingredient checker works, in detail

What counts as a pore-clogger, why position matters, how to read the verdict, and how the two scores fit in.

What counts as a pore-clogger

Pore-clogging, or comedogenic, ingredients are the ones that can block a pore and turn into a blackhead or whitehead. The usual suspects are heavy oils and butters (coconut oil, cocoa butter), fatty esters (isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyl palmitate), some algae extracts and a few emulsifiers such as laureth-4.

We sort them into two groups. High: consistently reported as pore-clogging in the classic tests and in dermatology guidance on acne and cosmetics. Moderate: reported in some tests, or only at high concentration, such as soybean oil, avocado oil, oleic acid and glyceryl stearate SE.

Why position in the list matters

Ingredient lists run from the largest amount to the smallest, down to about 1%; below that, brands can list ingredients in any order. So a pore-clogger at #3 is likely a real part of the formula, while one at #30 is probably a trace. The checker shows every flag with its position instead of a single pass or fail.

Why we don't give you a 0–5 comedogenic rating

Most comedogenic ratings online come from rabbit-ear tests from the 1970s and 80s, run on undiluted ingredients. That overstates the risk of the 1–2% you find in a finished cream, and dermatologists have long cautioned against reading those numbers as a verdict on a whole product. So instead of a scary number you get the name, the position, and enough context to judge the dose.

How to read the verdict

Every scan on this page ends with one of four pore-clogging verdicts:

VerdictWhat it means
No known pore-cloggersNone of the ingredients is on our pore-clogging list.
Low concernOnly moderate flags: ingredients reported in some tests, or only at high concentration.
WatchA high-group pore-clogger is in the formula, but after the first ten ingredients, where amounts are usually small.
Pore-clogger near the topA high-group pore-clogger sits in the first ten ingredients, where it is likely present at a meaningful level.

The acne actives it recognises

The checker also lists the ingredients with acne evidence behind them: benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, salicylic acid (and its relatives betaine salicylate and LHA), azelaic acid, sulfur, retinoids, niacinamide, zinc salts, glycolic and mandelic acid, and tea tree oil. It shows a strength only when the ingredient list states one; we never guess a percentage.

In the US, acne drugs such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and adapalene are listed separately under "Active ingredients" on the Drug Facts panel. If a retailer only publishes the inactive list, the active can be missing from what we read, so check the box.

Then the two DemythSkin scores

Every scan also gets an efficacy score (do the actives work, at a strength with evidence behind them?) and a safety score (irritants and sensitisers, weighted by how often they cause problems), each from 1.0 to 5.0, and every ingredient is graded from S to D. The pore-clogging check sits beside the scores rather than replacing them: a product can work well and still carry a flag, which is why we show both. How we score.

[ 04 · What we found ]

What we found in 1,136 products

We ran every product in the DemythSkin database through the same pore-clogging check on 27 October 2026. These are the real counts, and four scans that show how to read a result.

Across the database

28%of products contain at least one ingredient on our pore-clogging list (320 of 1,136)
18%contain one from the high group (207)
11%have a high-group pore-clogger in their first ten ingredients (130)
1 in 4moisturizers contain a high-group pore-clogger (66 of 259)

Counts from the DemythSkin database as of 27 October 2026. Products are added every day, so the live numbers move.

Made for acne isn't the same as free of pore-cloggers

Of the 92 products whose main skin goal is acne or oil control, 13 contain a high-group pore-clogger, and 8 have one in their first ten ingredients. The most common flags across the whole database are soybean oil, oleic acid and myristic acid (37 products each), then ethylhexyl palmitate (35) and sorbitan oleate (30).

Over-the-counter acne treatments, explained

Six actives do most of the work in non-prescription acne products. What each one does, the strengths you'll find on US shelves, and what it's best for.

ActiveWhat it doesOTC strengthBest forMain downside
Benzoyl peroxideKills the acne bacteria (C. acnes); bacteria don't become resistant to it2.5–10%; 2.5–5% is often as effective and less irritatingRed, inflamed pimplesDryness and irritation; bleaches towels, pillowcases and clothes
Adapalene (Differin)A retinoid: stops pores clogging and calms inflammation0.1% gelBlackheads, whiteheads and stopping new spots formingDryness, redness and flaking in the first weeks
Salicylic acid (BHA)Oil-soluble exfoliant that works inside the pore0.5–2%Blackheads, whiteheads, oily skinDryness; milder than benzoyl peroxide or adapalene
Azelaic acidAntibacterial, helps unclog pores and fades post-acne marks10–15% in cosmetic serums (15–20% is prescription)Acne with redness or dark marksTingling or itching at first
SulfurMildly antibacterial and drying3–10%Mild acne, spot treatmentSmell; dryness
NiacinamideReduces oil and rednessUsually 2–10%A supporting step next to a main activeNot strong enough to treat acne on its own

Strengths are the over-the-counter ranges sold in the US; check the Drug Facts label for the exact active. The American Academy of Dermatology's 2024 acne guidelines strongly recommend benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids such as adapalene.

Adapalene (Differin), explained

Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid that has been sold over the counter in the US at 0.1% since 2016. It's the strongest acne treatment you can buy without a prescription, and the two adapalene gels we've scanned score 4.7 for efficacy, the highest of any non-prescription acne treatment in our database.

Gel or cream? Over the counter in the US it's the 0.1% gel, which suits oily skin. The 0.1% cream, which suits drier skin, is prescription-only in the US.

With benzoyl peroxide: adapalene stays stable alongside benzoyl peroxide, and the two work better together. The ready-mixed gel (Epiduo) is prescription-only in the US, so over the counter use them separately: a benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning, adapalene at night.

Which moisturizer? A plain, fragrance-free one with no pore-cloggers. Two that pass our check with high scores: CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion (4.6 efficacy, 4.7 safety) and Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer (4.5, 4.9).

Daplin-C is a prescription gel that combines adapalene with the antibiotic clindamycin. It isn't sold over the counter, so ask a doctor whether it, or a US equivalent, suits you.

Adapalene vs retinol

AdapaleneRetinol

For breakouts, adapalene is the stronger choice; retinol is usually gentler.

[ 06 · Routine ]

A skincare routine for oily, acne-prone skin

Built from the lists above. Keep it short: one main active, a light moisturizer, and sunscreen every morning.

Morning

  1. CleanseA gentle cleanser, or a salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide wash if you're using one.
  2. Treat (optional)Azelaic acid or niacinamide if you have redness or marks. Skip it while you're starting adapalene.
  3. MoisturizeLight and fragrance-free, with no pore-cloggers near the top of the list.
  4. SunscreenSPF 30 or higher every day. It also stops post-acne marks from darkening.

Evening

  1. CleanseThe same gentle cleanser.
  2. AdapaleneA pea-sized amount for the whole face on dry skin, every other night for the first two weeks, then nightly if your skin is coping.
  3. MoisturizeThe same moisturizer, or a slightly richer one if adapalene is drying you out.

Starting new actives

Add one new active at a time and give it two to three weeks before adding another, so you know what's helping and what's irritating. Most acne treatments need 8 to 12 weeks to show their full effect. Some dryness and flaking early on is normal with adapalene; breakouts in new places, burning or swelling are not, so cut back or stop.

Body acne

A benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid body wash works on the chest and back too. Leave it on for a minute or two before rinsing so it has time to work. Shower and change out of sweaty clothes soon after exercise, and use white towels if you're using benzoyl peroxide, since it bleaches fabric.

[ 07 · Acne types ]

Types of acne, and what works on each

Acne isn't one thing. What's on your face decides which active to reach for.

Blackheads (open comedones)

A pore plugged with oil and dead skin that stays open at the surface. Salicylic acid and adapalene work best.

Whiteheads (closed comedones)

The same plug, closed over by skin, so it shows as a small skin-coloured or white bump. Adapalene works best.

Papules and pustules

Red, inflamed spots; pustules have a white or yellow head. Benzoyl peroxide, adapalene and azelaic acid.

Nodules and cysts

Deep, painful lumps under the skin that can scar. These usually need prescription treatment, so see a dermatologist.

Fungal acne

Small, itchy, same-size bumps caused by a yeast (Malassezia), not by bacteria. Regular acne treatments often don't help. Check products with the fungal acne checker.

What causes blackheads?

A blackhead is a pore plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Because the pore stays open, the plug is exposed to air, and the dark colour comes from oxidised oil and pigment, not dirt. Scrubbing won't fix it; salicylic acid and adapalene clear the plug from inside.

What is cystic acne?

Cystic acne is the most severe form: deep, painful, inflamed lumps that sit under the skin rather than on it. Over-the-counter products rarely clear it, and it's the type most likely to scar, so it's worth seeing a dermatologist early. They can prescribe oral or stronger topical treatments.

[ 09 · FAQ ]

Acne questions, answered

Short answers to what people ask most, with the evidence behind them.

What is the best over-the-counter acne treatment?

For most people, adapalene 0.1% gel at night plus a benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning. The American Academy of Dermatology's 2024 guidelines strongly recommend both: adapalene stops new clogged pores forming, and benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria behind red, inflamed pimples. On DemythSkin's scores, the two adapalene gels we've scanned rate 4.7 out of 5 for efficacy, the highest of any non-prescription acne treatment in our database.

How do you get rid of pimples fast?

There's no overnight cure, but you can shorten one. Put a hydrocolloid pimple patch on a spot that has come to a head, or dab a 2.5–5% benzoyl peroxide gel on an inflamed one once or twice a day. Don't squeeze it: that pushes inflammation deeper and raises the risk of a dark mark or scar. A large, painful cyst can be flattened within a day or two by a dermatologist's steroid injection.

Is this a comedogenic checker?

Yes. It flags known pore-clogging (comedogenic) ingredients by name and shows their position in the ingredient list, then scores the whole formula for efficacy and safety.

Will a flagged ingredient definitely break me out?

No. It depends on how much is in the formula and on your skin. A flag near the top of the list is worth taking seriously if you break out easily; one near the bottom is usually a trace. The flag tells you where to look.

Does “non-comedogenic” on the label mean it won't break me out?

Not necessarily. “Non-comedogenic” has no legal definition in the US, so each brand sets its own bar. The ingredient list is the only place you can see what's actually in the bottle.

What is the difference between adapalene and retinol?

Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid regulated as an acne drug and tested in clinical trials for acne; it has been sold over the counter in the US at 0.1% since 2016. Retinol is a cosmetic ingredient that skin has to convert into retinoic acid, and most of its research is on ageing, not acne. For breakouts, adapalene is the stronger choice; retinol is usually gentler.

Can I use adapalene and benzoyl peroxide together?

Yes. Adapalene stays stable alongside benzoyl peroxide, unlike tretinoin, and the two together work better than either alone. The ready-mixed gel is prescription-only in the US, so over the counter use them separately: a benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning and adapalene at night.

Is Lion Pair Acne Cream W good for acne?

It scored 3.2 out of 5 for efficacy and 4.2 for safety on DemythSkin. Its actives, ibuprofen piconol and isopropyl methylphenol, calm inflammation and fight bacteria, but they have far less acne research behind them than adapalene, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, so it didn't make our treatment list.

Is niacinamide good for acne?

It helps, but as a supporting ingredient. Niacinamide reduces oil and redness, and an early trial found a 4% niacinamide gel worked about as well as a 1% clindamycin gel on inflamed acne. Pair it with a main active such as adapalene or benzoyl peroxide. See our best niacinamide serums.

Is hyaluronic acid good for acne?

It doesn't treat acne, but it doesn't clog pores either. Its value is making drying acne treatments easier to tolerate, which helps you stick with them long enough for them to work.

Does zinc help acne?

Some. Oral zinc has modest evidence for inflammatory acne, and topical zinc mainly helps as a partner to other actives. Neither is as effective as adapalene or benzoyl peroxide, so treat zinc as an extra, not the main treatment.

Can salicylic acid cause acne?

No, salicylic acid doesn't cause acne, but it can irritate and dry skin, especially if you layer it with other acids or retinoids. If you break out in new places after starting it, that's more likely irritation than "purging": cut back to every other day or stop.

Does sugar cause acne?

Sugar doesn't cause acne on its own, but diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates (a high glycemic load) are linked to more breakouts in several studies, and some small trials found that a low-glycemic diet reduced acne. The effect is modest compared with a proper topical routine.

Do chemical peels help acne?

At-home exfoliating toners with salicylic or glycolic acid can help blackheads and rough texture. Stronger professional peels can help acne and post-acne marks, but they are best done by a dermatologist or licensed aesthetician, and not while you're using a retinoid on the same days.

How can I tell acne from a cold sore?

A pimple forms around a single pore and usually has one white or yellow head. A cold sore (oral herpes) tends to start with tingling or burning, then forms a cluster of small fluid-filled blisters, usually on or right next to the lip line. If you're unsure, or a sore keeps coming back in the same spot, see a doctor.

Can it check for fungal acne too?

Yes. Every scan here also runs the fungal acne check; open it under the pore-clogging result. For a fungal-acne-first view, use the fungal acne ingredient checker.

Is the acne checker free?

Yes. 5 scans a week without an account, 5 a day with a free account, unlimited with Pro. The pore-clogging check and the scores are the same on every plan.
