[ 02 · Why skin ages ]

Why skin ages, and what skincare can change

Skin ages for two reasons: time, which you can't change, and the sun and environment, which you can. Most of what an anti-aging product can do is slow the second and soften the visible results of both.

  1. 01The sunUV light breaks down collagen and elastin and causes uneven pigment. In a study of 298 women, sun exposure accounted for about 80% of visible signs of facial aging (Flament 2013). This is why sunscreen comes first.
  2. 02Less collagen every yearAdult skin loses roughly 1% of its collagen a year (Shuster 1975), and makes it more slowly, so it gets thinner and less firm. Retinoids and vitamin C are the best-studied ways to support new collagen.
  3. 03Slower renewalSkin cells turn over more slowly with age, so the surface looks duller and rougher, and dark spots linger. Exfoliating acids and retinoids speed this up.
  4. 04Drier, thinner skinSkin makes fewer oils and holds less water, so fine lines show more. Moisturizers can't reverse this, but they plump lines for the day.
  5. 05Movement, smoking and pollutionRepeated expressions etch lines on the forehead and around the eyes; smoking and air pollution add oxidative damage. Skincare softens these lines; it doesn't stop the muscles that cause them.
[ 03 · What treats what ]

Signs of aging, and what actually treats each one

Aging isn't one problem. Pick a sign to see which ingredients help and how strong the evidence is.

Fine lines & wrinkles

Strong evidence
What it does

Retinoids are the best-proven treatment for fine lines: over months they increase collagen and smooth the surface. Exfoliating acids (AHAs) and vitamin C help too.

Strongest evidence

Tretinoin improved sun-aged skin in controlled trials from 1988 on (Weiss 1988). Over the counter, 0.4% retinol improved fine wrinkles in older adults over 24 weeks (Kafi 2007), and 0.05% retinal matched 0.05% tretinoin on wrinkles over 44 weeks (Creidi 1998).

Best retinol serums

Sun spots & uneven tone

Strong evidence
What it does

Daily sunscreen stops new spots forming; retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and tranexamic acid fade the ones you have.

Strongest evidence

In a 4.5-year randomized trial, adults who used sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin aging, unlike the group that used it at their own discretion (Hughes 2013). Niacinamide 5% reduced spots and fine lines in a 12-week controlled trial (Bissett 2005).

Best vitamin C serums

Rough, dull texture

Strong evidence
What it does

Exfoliating acids such as glycolic and lactic acid loosen dead cells on the surface, so skin looks smoother and brighter within weeks. Retinoids do the same more slowly.

Strongest evidence

Alpha hydroxy acids improved the texture and appearance of sun-aged skin in a 6-month controlled trial (Ditre 1996).

Check your exfoliant

Dryness & crepey skin

Moderate evidence
What it does

Humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin pull water into the surface, and ceramides and squalane hold it there. Fine lines look softer for the day; the effect fades when you stop.

Strongest evidence

Moisturizers reliably improve hydration and the look of fine dryness lines in short studies, but the effect is temporary. They're the base of any routine, not a treatment on their own.

Best skincare for sensitive skin

Loss of firmness & sagging

Limited evidence
What it does

Firmness depends on collagen and elastin deep in the skin. Retinoids and vitamin C can support collagen a little over many months; peptides are promising but less proven. No cream lifts sagging skin.

Strongest evidence

Palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 improved fine lines in a 12-week controlled trial (Robinson 2005); evidence for firmness is weaker. Collagen applied to the skin can't get in to add to your own collagen.

What collagen creams really do

Lines under & around the eyes

Moderate evidence
What it does

The skin around the eyes is thinner and moves constantly. Low-strength retinoids, vitamin C and peptides in a gentle eye cream are the best-supported options.

Strongest evidence

Most retinoid trials included the crow's-feet area. Eye-area products are usually weaker, so results are slower, and irritation is more likely if you use a face-strength retinoid there.

Best eye creams for wrinkles

Evidence levels are our reading of the human studies: Strong means repeated controlled trials; Moderate means some controlled trials or short-term effects; Limited means small or early studies.

[ 04 · Tier chart ]

Anti-aging ingredients, ranked from proven to hype

Every ingredient in the DemythSkin database has a grade on the same S to D scale, based on the human evidence that it does what it's sold for. These are the ones you'll see on anti-aging labels.

SGold standard
Sunscreen filtersZinc oxide, Tinosorb S, avobenzone

The most proven anti-aging step: daily use slowed visible skin aging in a 4.5-year randomized trial.

RetinoidsTretinoin, retinal, retinol

Decades of trials for fine lines, texture and sun spots. Can irritate at first.

Vitamin CL-ascorbic acid

An antioxidant that adds to sun protection, fades spots and supports collagen.

AHAsGlycolic acid, lactic acid

Exfoliating acids with controlled trials for texture and sun-aged skin.

Tranexamic acid

Well-proven for dark spots and melasma, a common sign of sun-aged skin.

AReliable
NiacinamideVitamin B3

Reduced spots and fine lines in controlled trials, and well tolerated.

Hyaluronic acidSodium hyaluronate

Reliable for hydration and plumping fine lines for the day; doesn't treat wrinkles long-term.

Ceramides and squalane

Support the skin barrier, which weakens with age. Supporting players, not treatments.

AntioxidantsTocopherol, ferulic acid, CoQ10, adenosine

Vitamin E, ferulic acid, coenzyme Q10 and adenosine; most useful paired with vitamin C and sunscreen.

BPromising
PeptidesMatrixyl, Argireline, copper peptides (GHK-Cu)

Signal skin to make collagen. A few small trials; promising, not proven.

Bakuchiol

A plant retinol alternative; matched retinol in one small 12-week trial.

Retinyl estersRetinyl palmitate

The mildest retinoids; need three conversions, so they do little alone.

COverhyped
CollagenHydrolyzed collagen, soluble collagen

Too large to get into the skin and add to your own collagen; it moisturizes the surface.

PDRN and salmon DNASodium DNA, polydeoxyribonucleotide

Evidence is for injections by a doctor, not for creams and serums.

Exosomes and growth factorsEGF, sh-oligopeptide-1, stem cell extracts

Real biology, but very little evidence that they work from a jar.

Caviar and goldCaviar extract, colloidal gold

Luxury marketing with no controlled evidence for aging skin.

DDocumented irritant
Added fragranceParfum

Does nothing for aging and is a leading cause of skin allergy from cosmetics. Avoid it in a product you'll use every day.

S doesn't mean gentle, and C doesn't mean harmful: a C-tier ingredient is usually fine on your skin; it just doesn't do what the label implies. See our full ingredient guide.

[ 06 · Routine ]

A simple anti-aging routine that follows the evidence

Four products cover almost everything the evidence supports. Add one active at a time, and give each one 8 to 12 weeks.

Morning

  1. CleanseA gentle cleanser, or just water if your skin is dry.
  2. Vitamin C serumOptional, but a good partner for sunscreen.
  3. MoisturizerAnything you like that doesn't sting.
  4. SunscreenSPF 30 or higher, every day, rain or shine. This is the step that matters most.

Evening

  1. CleanseRemove sunscreen and makeup gently.
  2. RetinoidA pea-sized amount, two or three nights a week at first, building up to nightly.
  3. MoisturizerOn top, or underneath first if your skin is sensitive.
  4. Exfoliating acidOptional, on nights you don't use the retinoid.

Anti-aging by age

AgeFocusAdd
20sPreventionDaily sunscreen; a moisturizer. A vitamin C serum if you want one.
30sEarly fine lines, first spotsA low-strength retinol or retinal at night.
40sFine lines, uneven tone, textureBuild up the retinoid; add an AHA or niacinamide for tone.
50s and overDryness, thinner skin, deeper linesRicher creams with ceramides; a retinoid in a cream base; ask a dermatologist about prescription tretinoin.

Your skin doesn't follow your birthday: sun exposure matters more than age. Men's skin responds to the same ingredients; an "anti-aging cream for men" is a moisturizer like any other.

[ 07 · Wrinkles by area ]

Forehead, under-eye, mouth and neck wrinkles: what helps

Lines form in different places for different reasons, and skincare helps some more than others.

AreaWhy lines form thereWhat skincare can doBeyond skincare
ForeheadRaising your eyebrows, thousands of times a dayA retinoid softens fine lines over months; sunscreen slows new onesMuscle-relaxing injections, given by a doctor
Under the eyes and crow's feetThe thinnest skin on the face, plus smiling and squintingA gentle retinoid or peptide eye cream; sunglasses and sunscreenLasers, injections
Around the mouthLip movement, smoking, sun and volume lossA retinoid for fine lines; lip balm with SPFFillers, lasers
NeckThin skin that's often skipped with sunscreenTake your retinoid and sunscreen down to the neck; build up slowly, as it irritates easilyLasers, radiofrequency

If a line is there when your face is relaxed and it's deep, creams will only soften it. A dermatologist can tell you what will work.

The retinoid gap

Anti-aging products with a retinoid scored 4.08 for efficacy on average, against 3.72 for those without one. Products sold on collagen did worse, averaging 3.79, because collagen itself does little; when they score well, it's thanks to peptides, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid in the same formula. Price didn't predict the score: Alastin Restorative Skin Complex is rated Severely Overpriced at 4.1, below several drugstore retinol creams.

[ 09 · Myths ]

Anti-aging myths, checked against the evidence

  1. 01"Collagen creams add collagen to your skin"Collagen molecules are hundreds of times too large to get into skin. They hydrate the surface. See what collagen creams really do.
  2. 02"Caviar, gold and PDRN are the next retinol"There are no controlled trials showing caviar or gold creams reduce wrinkles. PDRN's evidence is for injections, not serums.
  3. 03"Expensive creams work better"In our database, price doesn't predict efficacy. A drugstore retinol cream can outscore a luxury one.
  4. 04"You don't need sunscreen indoors or when it's cloudy"UVA passes through clouds and windows and drives skin aging. Daily SPF is the one step proven to slow it.
  5. 05"Anti-aging is for older skin"Sun damage builds from childhood. Sunscreen in your 20s does more for your skin at 50 than any cream you start at 50.

[ 12 · FAQ ]

Anti-aging questions, answered

Short answers to what people ask most, with the evidence behind them.

What is the best anti-aging serum?

On our scores, retinoid serums lead: REMEDY For Healthy Aging (4.6 efficacy) and PURITO Retinol Retinal 2000 NAD+ Serum (4.5) top the list, with several retinal serums at 4.4. See the full rankings.

What's a good anti-wrinkle cream?

One with a retinoid, used at night, plus a daily sunscreen in the morning. Paula's Choice Clinical Ceramide-Enriched Firming Moisturizer (4.6) and Olay Retinol24 Night Cream (4.2) are the top-scoring creams in our database at very different prices.

Do anti-aging creams actually work?

Some do, for some signs. Retinoids, sunscreen, vitamin C and exfoliating acids have controlled trials behind them for fine lines, spots and texture. No cream lifts sagging skin or erases deep wrinkles, and many anti-aging ingredients, such as collagen, caviar and gold, have no good evidence.

How do I get rid of forehead wrinkles?

Skincare can soften fine forehead lines: a retinoid at night and sunscreen every day, for at least three months. Deep lines that show when your face is relaxed come from muscle movement, and the treatment that works for those is muscle-relaxing injections from a doctor.

How do I get rid of wrinkles under my eyes?

Use a gentle eye cream with a low-strength retinoid, vitamin C or peptides, wear sunglasses and sunscreen, and be patient: results take months. Under-eye skin is thin, so build up slowly. Lasers and injections help more for deeper lines.

How do I get rid of wrinkles around my mouth?

A retinoid softens fine lines around the mouth, and SPF lip balm prevents more sun damage. Lines from volume loss usually need fillers or lasers from a dermatologist.

How do I get rid of neck wrinkles?

Take your sunscreen and retinoid down to your neck, starting slowly because neck skin irritates easily. Horizontal neck lines are partly anatomy; skincare softens them but won't remove them.

What is the best anti-aging serum for your 40s or 50s?

The same ingredients work at every age: a retinoid at night and sunscreen every morning. In your 40s and 50s, choose a retinoid in a moisturizing base, and add ceramides for dryness. See the routine by age.

What is the best anti-aging cream for men?

Men's skin responds to the same ingredients. Pick any cream from our rankings: a retinoid cream for the evening and a sunscreen for the morning. "For men" usually just means different packaging and scent.

Is sunscreen really anti-aging?

Yes, it's the best-proven anti-aging product. In a 4.5-year randomized trial, people who used sunscreen every day showed no detectable increase in skin aging, while the comparison group did. Choose SPF 30 or higher you'll actually wear daily.

Are Korean anti-aging products better?

Not automatically. Korean brands are often good value and many score well with us, especially retinal serums and sunscreens. Judge each product by its ingredients, not where it's made.

Does caviar skincare work for anti-aging?

There's no controlled evidence that caviar extract reduces wrinkles. It's graded C, overhyped, in our database. The products that contain it get any benefit from other ingredients.

Do PDRN serums work?

PDRN (salmon DNA) has evidence as an injection given by a doctor. There's very little evidence for it in a serum or cream, so we grade it C. PDRN products that score well, like VT Cosmetics PDRN Essence 100 (4.2), do so because of their other ingredients.

Do peptides work for wrinkles?

Some peptides, such as palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl) and copper peptides, have a few small trials showing modest improvement in fine lines. They're gentle and promising, graded B, but less proven than retinoids.

Can I use hyaluronic acid with retinol?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid hydrates and is easy to tolerate, so it pairs well with a retinoid, especially while your skin adjusts. Apply it before or after; both work.

Do collagen gummies or supplements help skin?

Some trials found modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, but many were funded by supplement makers. They're a separate question from collagen creams, which can't add collagen to your skin. See our collagen guide.
