Check any skincare ingredient list

Type a product name to check its skincare ingredients. Every ingredient is graded S to D on the human evidence behind it, the formula gets an efficacy and a safety score from 1.0 to 5.0, and you see cheaper products that scored higher. Checking for acne or fungal acne triggers? Use the acne & pore-clogging checker or the fungal acne checker.

Science-backed skincare scores, in three steps

We don't rate products on reviews, price or how the brand describes them. We read the full ingredient list and score it against the published research.

  1. 01We find the full ingredient listThe complete INCI list, checked against the brand or the packaging. If a list is incomplete, we say so instead of guessing.
  2. 02Every ingredient gets a gradeS to D, based on the human evidence that it works and how gentle it is. Where it sits in the list counts too: an active near the end is usually a small amount.
  3. 03The formula gets two scoresEfficacy and safety, each from 1.0 to 5.0. Base scores are the same for everyone; a free profile adds flags for your own triggers.

What the active ingredients in your product actually do

An active ingredient is one that changes something in your skin, not just how the product feels. These are the actives the scanner sees most often, with the grade each one gets in the DemythSkin database.

Common skincare ingredients and their grades

IngredientGradeWhat it does
Retinol and retinalS · Gold standardSpeeds up skin cell turnover; the best-studied over-the-counter option for fine lines and clogged pores
Salicylic acid (BHA)S · Gold standardOil-soluble exfoliant that clears inside pores; a go-to for blackheads and breakouts
Azelaic acidS · Gold standardCalms redness and breakouts and fades dark marks; gentle enough for many with rosacea
Glycolic and lactic acid (AHAs)S · Gold standardExfoliate the surface for smoother, brighter skin
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid)S · Gold standardAntioxidant that adds to sun protection and fades dark spots
Tranexamic acidS · Gold standardFades dark spots and melasma
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxideS · Gold standardMineral sunscreen filters
NiacinamideA · ReliableSupports the skin barrier, evens tone, and can reduce oiliness
Hyaluronic acidA · ReliableHolds water in the skin's surface for short-term hydration
CeramidesA · ReliableRebuild the skin barrier that keeps moisture in
PanthenolA · ReliableSoothes and hydrates
PeptidesB · PromisingSignal skin to support collagen; human evidence is still small
Centella asiaticaB · PromisingSoothing; the evidence is mostly small studies
BakuchiolB · PromisingA gentler retinol alternative with a few small trials

Grades are for the ingredient. How well a product works also depends on how much is in it and the rest of the formula, which is what the scan checks.

Is it really in there?

A label can name an active that sits after the tenth ingredient, at a dose too small to do much. The scan shows each active's position in the list, so you can see whether the star ingredient is a real amount or a mention. DemythSkin vs CosDNA vs EWG Skin Deep

CosDNA and the EWG Skin Deep database are the best-known ways to look up skincare ingredients. They answer different questions from DemythSkin, so here is what each one does.

Why a hazard score isn't a risk score

A hazard is what an ingredient could do at some dose, in some test. Risk is what it's likely to do at the amount in your moisturizer, on your skin. Hazard-based ratings can flag an ingredient because of a high-dose animal study, while a well-studied active gets a middling score simply because it's potent.

That's why DemythSkin scores efficacy and safety separately, weighs how much of each ingredient is in the formula, and grades each one on human evidence. A product can be very gentle and do nothing, or effective and a little irritating; you should see both.

Comedogenic ratings, used carefully

Many pore-clogging ratings trace back to rabbit-ear tests on pure ingredients, which often don't match what happens on human skin in a finished product. We flag pore-cloggers by group and position rather than by a single number; see the acne & pore-clogging checker.

[ 05 · FAQ ]

The scanner, explained

How scoring works, how we compare with other ingredient checkers, and what "non-toxic" really means.

How do I check a product's ingredients?

Type the product's name. DemythSkin finds its exact, full INCI list, grades every ingredient from S to D, and gives the formula a DemythSkin efficacy score and a safety score, each from 1.0 to 5.0.

Which skincare ingredients actually work?

The ones with the most human evidence: retinoids, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, AHAs, vitamin C, sunscreen filters, and, for the barrier, niacinamide and ceramides. See what each active does, then scan your product to see whether it contains a real amount.

How is DemythSkin different from EWG Skin Deep?

EWG Skin Deep rates ingredients for potential hazards on a 1 to 10 scale. DemythSkin asks whether the product works: every ingredient is graded on the human evidence behind it, how much of it is in the formula counts, and the product gets separate efficacy and safety scores. See the side-by-side comparison.

Is CosDNA accurate?

CosDNA is handy for a quick look at acne and irritation flags, but its ratings are per ingredient, don't account for how much is in the product, and many comedogenic ratings come from old rabbit-ear tests. Product lists are submitted by users, so check they match the current formula. DemythSkin only scores full ingredient lists it can verify.

Does "non-toxic" skincare mean safe?

Not on its own. "Non-toxic" and "clean" aren't regulated terms for cosmetics, so each brand defines them its own way. Whether a product is safe for you depends on what's in it, how much, and your skin, not on the label. Our safety score looks at the actual ingredients, and a free profile flags your own triggers, like fragrance.

Why didn't my product get a score?

We only score complete ingredient lists. If a brand hasn't published its full INCI list anywhere we can verify, we say so instead of guessing.

Is the scanner free?

Yes. 5 scans a week with no account, 5 a day with a free account, unlimited with Pro. The scores are identical either way.

Can it check for pore-clogging or fungal acne ingredients?

Yes. Use the acne & pore-clogging ingredient checker or the fungal acne ingredient checker. Both run the same scan and also name every flagged ingredient with its position in the list, free.
