Best Retinol Serums Ranked: 20 Retinoids Scored (+ Cheaper Dupes).
We ran every popular OTC retinoid through our ingredient analyzer. Same active. Wildly different prices. Here's what scored.
Retinoids are the most evidence-backed class of ingredients in skincare. They speed cell turnover, build collagen, clear acne, and soften wrinkles. They also span a 100x price range for what is — at the molecular level — often the exact same active.
We tested 20 of the most popular retinoid products across three categories: adapalene (for acne), retinol (for beginner anti-aging), and retinaldehyde (for advanced anti-aging). The scores below come from the DemythSkin ingredient analyzer — no brand deals, no sponsored placements, just the formula.
Retinoid forms, weakest to strongest
Every retinoid converts to retinoic acid before your skin can use it. The fewer steps required, the faster it works — and the harder it can be on your barrier. The ladder below ranks the five common forms by how quickly they reach the active state.
Use: Sensitive skin, gentle maintenance · 3 conversions
Use: Fine lines, texture, everyday anti-aging · 2 conversions
Use: Faster anti-aging, advanced signs · 1 conversion
Use: Acne, clogged pores, blackheads · Binds receptor directly
Use: Stubborn acne + deep wrinkles · Prescription, active form
Prescription = better.
Not always. In head-to-head trials, OTC adapalene 0.1% matched tretinoin 0.025% for acne reduction — with faster onset and less irritation. The "strongest" rung isn't always the best one for your face.
How we tested
Each product was scanned through the free DemythSkin ingredient analyzer. The analyzer reads the INCI list, weights each ingredient by tier (from S — Gold Standards, down to D — Potential Irritants), checks for synergists and conflicts, and outputs two scores out of 5.0: Efficacy (does it work) and Safety (is it likely to irritate). Prices are approximate US retail at time of writing.
What follows isn't a list of brand opinions. It's the formula speaking for itself.
The adapalene rankings
Adapalene is the only OTC retinoid that binds the receptor directly — no liver conversion required. The FDA approved it for OTC sale in 2016, and it's now sold under a dozen brand names. They are all 0.1% adapalene. The active is identical. What differs is the base formula, marketing, and price.

Tied-top efficacy, highest safety, lowest price.
The same 0.1% adapalene as every product in the table — for $10. The $37 option scores no higher. If you've been buying Differin or La Roche-Posay because you assumed the price reflected the formula, the data says otherwise.
The retinol rankings
Retinol is the anti-aging starting point for most people: gentler than retinal, stronger than retinyl esters. It needs two conversions to become active, so concentration and stability matter. Most products fall between 0.1% and 1%. The big variables are percentage, delivery system (encapsulated vs. free), and supporting cast (peptides, niacinamide, ceramides).

4.1 | 3.6 | $30 |
Highest efficacy and highest safety — high percentage done right.
A 1% retinol that also scores 4.7 on safety is rare. The formula leans hard on supporting ingredients (peptides, antioxidants) that buffer irritation. If your budget allows, this is the no-compromise pick.
Value pick: The Ordinary 0.5% in Squalane at $10. Lower safety than the winner (4.2 vs 4.7) but identical efficacy at one-sixth the price. The squalane base also helps tolerance for beginners.
The retinaldehyde rankings
Retinaldehyde (or retinal) is one conversion away from active retinoic acid — making it roughly 11x faster than retinol at producing results, with comparable irritation in most studies. It's the form you graduate to when retinol stops impressing you but a prescription feels like overkill.

Top-tier efficacy, safe, cheapest in class.
Crystal Retinal scores marginally higher on efficacy (4.6) but drops to a 3.6 safety caution — and costs $89. K-Secret delivers 4.5/4.3 at $20. The liposome encapsulation is doing the work: same active, time-released, gentler.
Note on the 2% claim: K-Secret markets this as a 2% retinal liposome formulation, which refers to the liposome-encapsulated delivery system, not 2% free retinal (which would be unprecedented in OTC). Either way, the analyzer scores the formula as-listed.
How to choose yours
The "best" retinoid depends entirely on what you're treating. Here's the short-form decision:
For breakouts & clogged pores
→ Glenmark Adapalene 0.1% · $10
Same active as Differin. Same active as La Roche-Posay. Save your money for moisturizer.
Starting retinoids for the first time
→ The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% · $10
Lower concentrations (0.25%) are gentler but plateau faster. 0.5% in squalane is the sweet spot — effective, well-tolerated, cheap enough to actually finish the bottle.
Ready for faster results
→ K-Secret Seoul 1988 Retinal · $20
Retinal is ~11x faster than retinol. K-Secret's liposome system gets you Medik8-tier results at one-quarter the cost.
One more rule
Whichever rung you pick, start at 2–3 nights per week for the first month. Always pair with a moisturizer and use SPF in the morning. The fastest way to fail at retinoids is to start too aggressive, get red and flaky, and quit by week two. Potency you can't sustain beats nothing — but only by a little.
